A bill to strengthen participation of elected national legislators in the activities of the Organization of American States and reaffirm United States support for Organization of American States human rights and anti-corruption initiatives, and for other purposes.

Sponsor: Sen. Benjamin Cardin — D — MD

Encourages the State Department to support various reforms to the operations of the Organization of American States (OAS). OAS is an international organization composed of 35 countries in North America and South America that promotes regional security, democracy, human rights, and economic development in the region. The bill also would require the department to report to the Congress on its strategy for supporting the OAS and on its subsequent actions to implement that strategy. In addition, the department would be required to report on the effectiveness of OAS efforts to advance human rights and combat corruption.
