Biography

John David Dingell, Jr., (son of John David Dingell and husband of Debbie Dingell), was a Representative from Michigan.

Born in Colorado Springs, CO, in 1926, he worked as a Page in the United States House of Representatives from 1938-1943. He earned his B.S. from Georgetown University in 1949 and his J.D. from Georgetown University Law School in 1952.

He served in the United States Army from 1944-1946 and worked as a private practice lawyer as well as research assistant to United States Circuit Judge Theodore Levin from 1952-1953. He was assistant prosecuting attorney of Wayne County, MI, from 1954-1955 and a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions in 1956, 1960, 1968, 1980, and 1984.

He was elected to the 84th Congress by special election to fill the vacancy caused by the death of his father, United States Representative John D. Dingell, Sr., and reelected to the 29th succeeding Congresses (1955- 2015). He was not a candidate for reelection to the 114th Congress in 2014.

He chaired the Committee on Energy and Commerce (97th through 103rd Congresses and 110th Congress).
