Biography

Kweisi Mfume is a Representative from Maryland. Born Frizzell Gray in Baltimore on October 24, 1948 he attended public schools before earning his B.S. from Morgan State University in 1976. He earned his M.A. from Johns Hopkins University in 1984 and was an assistant professor at Morgan State University and then a program director for a radio station. He was elected as a member of the Baltimore city council from 1979-1986 before being elected as a Democrat to the 100th Congress and to the four succeeding Congresses. He served until his resignation on February 15, 1996 (January 3, 1987-February 15, 1996) and then served as chief executive officer of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People from 1996-2004. Elected as a Democrat to the 116th Congress by special election to fill the vacancy caused by the death of U.S. Representative Elijah Eugene Cummings, he has served from April 28, 2020-present.
