Biography

Gary C. Peters is a Senator from Michigan. Born in Pontiac, MI, in 1958, he earned his B.A. from Alma College in 1980 and his M.B.A., finance, from the University of Detroit in 1984. He earned his J.D. from Wayne State University in 1989 and his M.A. in philosophy from Michigan State University in 2007. He served in the United States Navy Reserve (1993-2000, 2001-2005) and was assistant vice president of Merrill Lynch from 1980-1989; as well as vice president, UBS/Paine Webber, from 1989-2003. He was an arbitrator for the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority; and an instructor, Oakland University and Wayne State University, as well as a professor at Central Michigan University; and member, Rochester Hills, Mich., city council from 1991-1993. He served in the Michigan state senate from 1995-2002 and was an unsuccessful candidate for Michigan state attorney general in 2002. He was chief administrative officer for the bureau of investments, state of Michigan, 2003; and lottery commissioner, state of Michigan, 2003-2007. He was elected as a Democrat to the 111th and to the two succeeding Congresses. He was elected to the US Senate in 2014.
