George Victor Voinovich was a Senator from Ohio. Born in Cleveland, OH, he earned his B.A. in government from Ohio University in 1958 and his J.D. from Ohio State University College of Law in 1961. He was assistant attorney general of Ohio in 1963 and an Ohio state representative from 1967-71. He was lieutenant governor of Ohio in 1979 and mayor of Cleveland from 1979-89. He was governor of Ohio from 1991-1998 and chairman of the National Governors Association from 1997-1998. He was elected to the United States Senate in 1998 and reelected in 2004, serving until January 3, 2011. He was not a candidate for reelection to the Senate in 2010 and was a resident of Cleveland, Ohio, until his death on June 12, 2016.
