Mary Kathryn (Heidi) Heitkamp was a Senator from North Dakota. Born in Breckenridge, MN, in 1955, she earned her B.A. from the University of North Dakota in 1977 and her J.D. from Lewis & Clark College in 1980. She has served as a lawyer for the Environmental Protection Agency from 1980-1981; and a lawyer for the Office of the North Dakota State Tax Commissioner from 1981-1986. She was also director of the Dakota Gasification Company and tax commissioner of North Dakota from 1986-1992, as well as attorney general of North Dakota from 1992-2000. She was an unsuccessful Democratic candidate for governor of North Dakota in 2000 and elected to the United States Senate in 2012. She was defeated in the 2018 general election.
