Biography

John Cornyn is a Senator from Texas. Born in Houston, TX, in 1952, he earned his B.A. from Trinity University in 1973, his J.D. from St. Mary's School of Law in 1977, and his LLM from the University of Virginia in 1995. He was Bexar County district court judge from 1984-1990 and served on the Texas supreme court from 1990-1997. He was Texas state attorney general from 1999-2002.

He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2002 and subsequently appointed to the remainder of the term left vacant by the resignation of William Philip (Phil) Gramm. He vice-chaired the Republican Conference (2007-2009) and chaired the National Republican Senatorial Committee (2009-2012). He is also Republican party whip (2013-present).
