Kent Conrad was a Senator from North Dakota. Born in Bismarck, ND, he attended the University of Missouri in 1967 and graduated from Stanford University in 1971. He received a graduate degree from George Washington University in 1975. He was assistant to the tax commissioner, Bismarck, from 1974-1980, and tax commissioner for the State of North Dakota from 1981-1986. He was elected to the United States Senate in 1986 for the term ending January 3, 1993. He was elected in a special election on December 4, 1992, to the unexpired portion of the term ending January 3, 1995, left vacant by the death of Quentin N. Burdick, which he assumed on December 14, 1992 and was then reelected in 1994, 2000, and again in 2006. He served until January 3, 2013. He did not run for reelection in 2012.
