Sam Dale Brownback was a Representative and a Senator from Kansas. Born in Garnett, KS, he graduated from Kansas State University in 1979 and received his law degree from the University of Kansas in 1982. He was an administrator, broadcaster, teacher, attorney, and author. He was Kansas Secretary of Agriculture from 1986-1993 and a White House Fellow detailed to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative from 1990-1991. He was elected to the 104th Congress and began serving January 3, 1995. He was elected to the United States Senate in a special election on November 5, 1996, to the unexpired portion of the term ending January 3, 1999, left vacant by the resignation of Robert Dole. He was reelected in 1998 and again in 2004, and served until January 3, 2011. He was elected governor of Kansas in 2010 and took the oath of office on January 10, 2011.
