Barton Jennings Gordon was a Representative from Tennessee. Born in Murfreesboro, TN, he earned his B.S. from Middle Tennessee State University in 1971 and his J.D. from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1973. He served in the United States Army from 1971-1972 and was a private practice lawyer. He was executive director of the Tennessee state Democratic Party in 1979 and chair of the Tennessee state Democratic Party from 1981-1983 before being elected to the 99th and to the 12 succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1985-January 3, 2011). He did not run for reelection to the 112th Congress in 2010. He was chair, Committee on Science and Technology (110th and 111th Congresses).
