Sheila Sherfilus-McCormick was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on January 25, 1979 and graduated from Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory in Hollywood, FL in 1997. She earned her B.A. from Howard University in 2001 and attended the University of Maryland Global Campus from 2005-2007. She earned her J.D. from St. Thomas University School of Law in 2010 before becoming a health care executive. An unsuccessful candidate for nomination to the 116th Congress in 2018 and an unsuccessful candidate for nomination to the 117th Congress in 2020, she was elected as a Democrat to the 117th Congress by special election to fill the vacancy caused by the death of United States Representative Alcee Lamar Hastings (January 11, 2022-present).
