Barbara Boxer was a Senator from California. Born Barbara Levy in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1940, she attended public schools before earning her B.A. from Brooklyn College in 1962; working as a stockbroker from 1962-1965; a newspaper editor from 1972-1974; and a congressional aide from 1974-1976. She was elected a member of the Board of Supervisors for Marin County, CA in 1976 and served as a delegate to the California State Democratic convention in 1983.
She was elected as a Democrat to the 98th and to the four succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1983-January 3, 1993); and elected to the United States Senate from 1992-2017. She served as chair, Committee on Environment and Public Works (110th to 113th Congresses), Select Committee on Ethics (110th to 113th Congresses).
