Barbara Ann Mikulski is a Senator from Maryland. Born in Baltimore, MD, in 1936, she graduated from Mount St. Agnes College in 1958 and received a graduate degree from the University of Maryland School of Social Work in 1965. She was a social worker in Baltimore; a college professor; and member of the Baltimore City Council from 1971-1976. She was an unsuccessful Democratic candidate for the United States Senate in 1974 and elected as a Democrat to the 95th Congress and reelected to the four succeeding Congresses. She was elected to the United States Senate from 1987-2017. She has been Democratic Conference secretary (1995-2005); chair, Committee on Appropriations (112th and 113th Congresses).
