Carl Levin (brother of Sander Martin Levin) was a Senator from Michigan. Born in Detroit, MI, he graduated Swarthmore College in 1956 and Harvard Law School in 1959. He was admitted to the Michigan bar in 1959 and commenced practice in Detroit. He was assistant attorney general and general counsel for the Michigan civil rights commission from 1964-1967 and special assistant attorney general for the State of Michigan, and chief appellate defender for the city of Detroit, from 1968-1969. He was a member of the Detroit city council from 1969-1973, serving as president from 1974-1977. He was elected to the United States Senate in 1978 and reelected in 1984, 1990, 1996, 2002, and again in 2008. He served from January 3, 1979, to January 3, 2015. He was chair, Committee on Armed Services (107th Congress and 110th-113th Congresses). He did not run for reelection in 2014.
