Daniel Ray "Dan" Coats is a Senator from Indiana. Born in Jackson, MI, in 1943, he graduated Jackson High School in 1961. He earned his B.A. from Wheaton College in 1965 and graduated Indiana University School of Law in 1971. He served in the United States Army from 1966-1968 and was district representative for United States Congressman J. Danforth "Dan" Quayle fro 1976-1980. He was elected to the 97th and to the three succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1981-January 3, 1989) and elected to the 101st Congress but did not serve, instead being appointed in 1988 to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the election of Dan Quayle as Vice President. He was elected by special election in 1990 to the remainder of the term and reelected for a full term in 1992. He served from 1989 to 1999 and then served as U.S. Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany from 2001-2005. He was elected to the United States Senate in 2010.
