Herb Kohl was born in Milwaukee, Wis. on February 7, 1935. He attended Milwaukee public schools before graduating from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1956. He received his M.B.A. from Harvard School of Business Administration in 1958 and served in the United States Army Reserves from 1958-1964. A businessman, the president of Kohl Corporation and owner of Milwaukee Bucks basketball team, Kohl was Wisconsin State Democratic Party chairman from 1975-1977 before being elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1988. Reelected in 1994, 2000, and again in 2006, he served from January 3, 1989 to January 3, 2013. He was the chair of the Special Committee on Aging (in the One Hundred Tenth to One Hundred Twelfth Congresses), and was not a candidate for reelection to the Senate in 2012.
