Joe Manchin III is a Senator from West Virginia. Born in 1947 in Farmington, WV, he earned his B.A. from West Virginia University in 1970. He was a businessman and member of the West Virginia house of delegates from 1982-1986, and a member of the West Virginia state senate from 1986-1996. He ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in 1996 and served as Secretary of State, West Virginia, from 2000-2004. He was elected governor of West Virginia in 2004 and reelected in 2008, serving as chairman of the National Governors Association in 2010. In November 2010, he was elected to the U.S. Senate in a special election to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Robert C. Byrd. He was reelected in 2012.
