Jon Kyl (son of John Henry Kyl) is a Senator and a Representative from Arizona. Born in Oakland, Nebraska in 1942, he earned his B.A. from the University of Arizona in 1964 and his LL.B. from the University of Arizona in 1966. He was admitted to the Arizona State Bar in 1966 and practiced law as a member of Jennings, Strouss and Salmon in Phoenix from 1966-1986. He was the chairman of the Phoenix Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce from 1984-1985 before being elected as a Republican to the 100th and to the three succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1987-January 3, 1995). He was not a candidate for reelection to the House of Representatives in 1994. He was then elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in 1994 and reelected in 2000, and again in 2006, and served from January 3, 1995 to January 3, 2013. He served as the Republican party whip (2007-2013), chair of the Republican Policy Committee (2003-2007), and Republican Conference (2007). He was not a candidate for reelection to the Senate in 2012. He was appointed as a Republican to the United States Senate on September 4, 2018, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John Sidney McCain, III and took the oath of office on September 5, 2018, to serve until a special election is held on November 3, 2020, for the remainder of the term ending January 3, 2023.
