Joseph I Lieberman was a Senator from Connecticut. Born in Stamford, CT, he graduated from Yale University in 1964 and earned a law degree from Yale Law School in 1967. He was a member of Connecticut state senate from 1970-1980, serving as majority leader from 1974-1980. He was attorney general of Connecticut in 1983 and from 1986-1988. He was elected to the United States Senate in 1988; and reelected as a Democrat in 1994 and 2000. In 2006, he was reelected as an Independent Democrat. He served from January 3, 1989, to January 3, 2013. He was an unsuccessful candidate for vice president on the Democratic ticket with Al Gore, Jr., in 2000 and an unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic nomination for president in 2004. He did not seek reelection to the Senate in 2012.
