Biography

Mark Begich (son of Nicholas J. Begich) was a Senator from Alaska. Born in Anchorage, AK, he was a small business owner and real estate and property manager, as well as a member of the Anchorage Assembly from 1988-1998, serving as chair in 1993 and from 1996-1998. He served on the Alaska Student Loan Corporation from 1995-2002, and chair from 1996-2002. He was on the Alaska Commission of Post-secondary Education from 1995-2002, serving as chair from 1996-1998. He was on the University of Alaska Board of Regents from 2001-2002 and mayor of Anchorage from 2003-2009. He was elected to the United States Senate in 2008, and served from January 3, 2009, to January 3, 2015. He ran unsuccessfully for reelection in 2014.
