Olympia Jean Snowe was a Senator and a Representative from Maine. Born in Augusta, ME, she earned her B.A. from the University of Maine in 1969 and was a businesswoman, as well as district office manager for Representative William S. Cohen. She served on the Auburn board of voter registration from 1971-1973 and in the Maine house of representatives from 1973-1976 and the Maine State senate from 1976-1978. She was a delegate to the Maine State Republican convention in 1976 and a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1976. She was elected to the 96th and to the seven succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1979-January 3, 1995). She was elected to the United States Senate in 1994 and reelected in 2000, and 2006. She served from January 3, 1995, to January 3, 2013. She was chair, Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship (108th and 109th Congresses). She did not seek reelection in 2012.
