William Thad Cochran is a Senator from Mississippi. Born in Pontotoc, MS, in 1937, he graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1959 and the University of Mississippi Law School in 1965. He studied international law and jurisprudence at Trinity College, University of Dublin, Ireland from 1963-1964; and served in the United States Navy from 1959-1961. He was admitted to the Mississippi bar in 1965 and commenced practice in Jackson. He was elected to the 93rd Congress in 1972 and reelected to the 94th and 95th Congresses and served until his resignation in 1978. He was subsequently appointed by the Governor on December 27, 1978, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of James O. Eastland for the term ending January 3, 1979. He has chaired the Senate Republican Conference (1991-1997), Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry (108th Congress); Committee on Appropriations (109th and 114th Congresses).
