To amend title 38, United States Code, to establish in the Department of Veterans Affairs an Office of Food Security, and for other purposes.

Sponsor: Rep. Mary Peltola — D — AK

Requires the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to establish the Office of Food Security. Responsibilities of the office would include disseminating information to veterans about federal nutrition assistance programs, collaborating with other program offices to identify and treat veterans at risk of or experiencing food insecurity, and supporting the work of VA medical centers with state and local offices that administer the nutrition assistant programs. The bill also would require VA to report to the Congress annually. That report would include data about the socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds of veterans experiencing food insecurity, participation in supplemental nutrition assistance programs, and coordination between state agencies and VA facilities.
