Biography

Donald Edwin (Don) Young is a Representative from Alaska. Born in Meridian, CA, in 1933, he earned his A.A. from Yuba Junior College in 1952 and his B.A. from California State University in 1958. He served in the United States Army from 1955-1957 and worked as a teacher and as Mayor of Fort Yukon, AK, from 1960-1968. He was a riverboat captain from 1968-1972 and a member of the Fort Yukon, AK, city council from 1960-1968, and a member of the Alaska state house of representatives from 1966-1970.

He was a member of the Alaska state senate from 1970-1973, a delegate to the Alaska state Republican conventions in 1964, 1966, 1968, and 1972; and elected to the 933rd Congress by special election to fill the vacancy caused by the death of United States Representative Nick Begich.

He was reelected to the twenty-one succeeding Congresses (March 6, 1973-present). He has chaired the Committee on Resources (104th-106th Congresses) and the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure (107th-109th Congresses).
