Biography

Martha McSally was a Senator from Arizona. Born in Warwick, RI, in 1966, she earned her B.S. from the United States Air Force Academy in 1988 and her M.P.P. from the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, in 1990.

She was a fighter pilot and served in the United States Air Force from 1988-2010. She also was a professor and unsuccessful candidate for nomination to the United States House of Representatives in 2012. She was elected to the 114th Congress and to the succeeding Congress (January 3, 2015-January 3, 2019).

She was not a candidate for reelection to the 116th Congress in 2018, but was an unsuccessful candidate for election to the U.S. Senate. Appointed as a Republican to the Senate on January 3, 2019, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Sen. John McCain, a seat previously held by appointed senator Jon Kyl. McSally served from January 3, 2019 to December 2, 2020. She was an unsuccessful candidate in the November 2020 special election to the remainder of the term ending January 3, 2023.
