Biography

Nancy Pelosi is a Representative from California. Born Nancy D'Alesandro in Baltimore, MD, in 1940, she earned her A.B. from Trinity College in 1962. She served as chair of the California State Democratic Party from 1981-1983 and as finance chairman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee from 1985-1986.

She was elected to the 100th Congress, by special election, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of United States Representative Sala Burton of California, and reelected to the fourteen succeeding Congresses (June 2, 1987-present). She has been minority whip (107th Congress) and minority leader (108th, 109th, and 112tth through 114th Congresses). She was the first female Speaker of the House for the 110th and 111th Congresses and serves as Speaker of the House in the 116th Congress.
