Biography

Robert Menendez is a Senator from New Jersey. Born in New York, NY, in 1954, he earned his B.A. from Saint Peter’s College in 1976 and his J.D. from Rutgers University School of Law in 1979. He has been a private practice lawyer; member of the Union City, N.J., board of education from 1974-1978, and chief financial officer from 1978-1982; mayor of Union City, N.J., from 1986-1992; member of the New Jersey state general assembly from 1987-1991; and member of the New Jersey state senate from 1991-1993. He was elected to the 103rd and to the six succeeding Congresses. He chaired the House Democratic Caucus (108th through 109th Congresses). He was appointed in 2006 to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Jon S. Corzine. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006. He chaired the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (2008-2011), and the Committee on Foreign Relations (113th Congress).
